Gutter cleaning is one of those chores that is easy to put off because you cannot see the problem until it is a big one. But clogged gutters cause some of the most expensive damage a home can suffer, and clearing them is one of the cheapest ways to prevent it. Here is what actually happens when gutters back up, and why it matters more than most homeowners think.
What clogged gutters actually do
The whole job of a gutter is to catch the water coming off your roof and carry it away from the house. When leaves and debris pack the gutters and downspouts, that water has nowhere to go, so it pours over the sides and runs straight down your walls and foundation. That is where the damage starts.
- ▸Rotted fascia and soffits. Water spilling over the back edge soaks the wood trim behind the gutter and rots it.
- ▸Foundation problems. Water dumping at the base of the house works into the foundation and can cause cracks and settling.
- ▸Flooded basements and crawl spaces. All that overflow has to go somewhere, and often it ends up under your house.
- ▸Ruined landscaping. A waterfall off the gutter tears up the beds and mulch below.
- ▸Ice and extra weight in winter. Clogged gutters hold water that freezes, and the weight can pull the gutters loose.
None of that is cheap to fix. Rotted fascia, a cracked foundation, or a flooded basement runs into real money. A gutter cleaning is a fraction of that.
A gutter cleaning is cheap. Rotted fascia, a cracked foundation, and a flooded basement are not. This is the definition of an ounce of prevention.
Why East Tennessee homes clog fast
All the trees that make our area beautiful also fill your gutters. Homes around Knoxville, Fountain City, and the surrounding towns collect leaves, twigs, seed pods, and shingle grit all year, with a big load in the fall. Add spring pollen and helicopters from the maples and your gutters fill up faster than you would expect. If your home sits under heavy tree cover, it clogs even quicker.
How a proper gutter cleaning works
A real gutter cleaning is more than scooping the visible leaves out of the top. It clears the whole system and makes sure water actually flows.
- Clear all the leaves and debris out of the gutter channels.
- Flush and clear the downspouts so they are not packed solid at the bottom.
- Run a flush test so we can see that water drains the way it should.
- Brighten the black tiger-stripe stains on the outside faces so the whole exterior looks finished.
That last part is worth calling out. Those dark stripes running down the front of your gutters are an oxidation and grime buildup. Clearing the inside does not touch them. Brightening the outside faces is a separate step, and we do both so your gutters look as clean as they work.
How often to clean your gutters here
For most East Tennessee homes, twice a year is the sweet spot. Once in late spring after the pollen and seed pods drop, and once in the fall after the leaves come down. Homes surrounded by trees may need it more often. If it has been more than a year, your gutters are almost certainly overdue.
What gutter cleaning costs
Gutter cleaning falls in a ballpark of roughly $75 to $200 depending on the size of the home, the height, and how packed the gutters are. That is a planning range. We confirm the exact price with a free estimate. For what it protects, it is one of the best-value services on your home.
Please skip the ladder
Falls from ladders send a lot of homeowners to the emergency room every year, and gutter cleaning is one of the top reasons people are up on one. Between the height, the awkward reach, and leaning out to grab that last handful, it is just not worth the risk. Leave it to someone set up to do it safely.
